Xmas decoration swap

Well, Dianne finally got her Xmas decorations so I can now post the pics. Here they are. I was in a swap with the patchNquilt group and had to send a Xmas decoration to my swap partner. She liked them, thank heavens!
They're actually supposed to be drink coasters. Do they look like they are? These took me for absolute ever! I cut the material out to the wrong size, then had to put on borders. When I sewed the back, the wadding and the front together and turned them inside out, I didn't know how to slip stitch so I machine stitched them closed. What a disaster! Oh well. They're done, posted and received!

100 Sunrises in 100 Days

Hi, I can't help myself. I've created another blog. I thought I should separate it from my crafty journey.

It's 100 Sunrises in 100 Days. http://100sunrises.blogspot.com/

I really must find a lovely sunrise background for it.

It's my quest to get off my a#$ and start moving. So by the time I get to 41, I'm not the naughty sloth that I have been. Am I being a bit hard on myself? You betcha.

Come and join me in my quest. You never know where we might end up!

Thank you for visiting my blog!

Xmas shopping

I always leave my Xmas shopping until the very last minute. What a stressful time it then becomes.

Yesterday I went to a local craft market in Jindabyne and bought a few goodies. There were certainly some very talented local people selling their wares! They do a wonderful job every year getting their goods ready for the Xmas market. Congratulations. You all excelled.

This one I love. I bought it for our granddaughter Grace though my fiance wasn't too impressed. It''s supposed to signify something rural/country - it's not meant to scare her. Maybe I have to rethink this gift. What do you think?

As it's Grace's first Christmas, I bought a couple of Xmas decorations as well...made by our dedicated ladies from the Country Women's Association...

and a couple for the walls. These were made by the ladies from Snowy Mountains Quilters. Some of the goods they had on sale were absolutely beautifully done!

And last but not least, I bought these Farmer's Daughter items. Kirsten is a very talented young lass indeed.

A couple of lavender wheat bags...they just smell divine!

and some jim jams for my lil sis. The photo doesn't really show what they're like but they are very groovy!

Spring has finally sprung in my garden!

I took these photos on Saturday morning. The 6th December and spring has finally sprung in my garden! Things have been so dry here and the 35mm we got the week before last is finally having an effect on my garden. We're on tank water so every last drop lately has been purely dedicated to our household use and the horse troughs.

This is part of our property. It was a dustbowl a week ago. It's amazing how a bit of moisture can make such a significant change.
Here's my Man From Snowy River riding his horse Charlie Brown. She's just recently been broken in.

I just love pansies. Every pansy has its own smiley face. Purple is my favourite colour so of course I had to buy the biggest purple pansies possible. They look fantastic! So do the crimson coloured ones.

Roses would have to be my favourite flower. Though I'm not much of a rose grower, I'm quite proud these have actually flowered given my poor attention. Thank heavens Dad's a green thumb! This climbing rose is currently in need of a trim. It's actually crawling along the ground at the moment.

I can't even tell you what this one is named. It's a small little bush. Hardly ever gets watered but is brimming with buds.

This is my Pierre de Ronsard - can't say this beautiful rose is flourishing in my garden yet.

Isn't this one a treat!

Me Change - D Day is Approaching

What is the definition of D Day? D Day is often used in the military to denote the day on which a combat attack or operation is to be initiated.

Well D Day in Shauna’s life will be Wednesday 10 December.

I recently turned 40 and I'm not happy about it. I would have thought that after surviving cancer turning 40 would be a breeze. I thought I would be jumping for joy and wanting to celebrate.

In actually fact, it hit me like a tonne of bricks. Why? I’m not quite sure. Is it because I’m now over the hill…middle aged? Overweight and wrinkly? Gravity is taking effect on my body? I feel like I haven’t achieved anything in my 40 years? I’m not married yet?

I’ve decided that the next 12 months is going to be a year of transformation. Things have to change, with D Day being Wednesday 10 December. Why that date? Well, I’ve already let 4 weeks get away from me. Wednesday will be 47 weeks until my 41st birthday. By then I want to be able to say that I have improved some areas of my life; that I am happier and I am progressing. Don't get me wrong. I am very happy with some aspects but there are many aspects I could improve.

What does D Day mean for me? It will mean:
  • discovery
  • dedicated dramatic change from dowdy and dweeby to dainty
  • diet and damage control
  • daffodils, daisies and dahlias
  • turning day dreams into direction
  • devotion instead of dissociation
  • d time = me time
  • droving – I will learn to ride a horse!
  • dimples

So I haven't really thought about this much but....

In order to achieve a Me Change, every Wednesday I will be posting my goals for the next week and my achievements from the previous week. To have a reference to go back to and to physically see a change will be motivating. I might be opening a can of worms!

I will be comfortably smiling by my 41st birthday!

First ever pillow - crazy patched

So today I thought I'd share with you my 2nd ever finished item. It was a gift for my dear friend Maggie for her birthday in 2004. I am definitely not a sewer by any means as you can see from the end result. I guess it's the thought that counts, hey Maggie!

Check out the label. I can't stitch to save myself. It makes me laugh everytime I see the pillow sitting on Maggie's lounge.

LESSONS LEARNT

1. sew the label on the backing fabric before you finish the item
2. fold the edges over on the label (to make a hem as such to surround the label) before sewing. That way all loose threads are covered and things won't fray
3. don't try to handstitch something - you're hopeless!

Til next time....take care and thanks for visiting my blog.

The Xmas Decoration is finished - hallelujah!

I finally finished my Xmas decoration at 11pm last night. Got home from work at about 5.30pm and got stuck into it from about 6pm. I won't post a picture until Dianne actually receives her gift however I must say that it's totally different to what I started off doing! What an epic it turned out to be. I'll post a pic in a few days time. Wait for the surprise....

I finally have a sewing room!

Yippee! I finally have a sewing room. This has only taken 4 years to come about and a lot of procrastination!

My fiance spent some of last summer and part of this winter building me a 2 bay garage. The purpose of the garage is so I can get my car out of his 3 bay shed and my crap out of the spare room.

On the weekend I finally cleared out the spare room and put everything in the garage. The garage was completely empty before I started. Note to self: sort everything and stack neatly in garage!
The following photos show the contents of the spare room. I don't know how I ever fitted it in the spare room - it was literally chocked from floor to ceiling!
Ahh, the serenity. Here's the spare room now.

And, last but not least, my sewing room is set up. I now need to fill it with all things beautiful. Any suggestions?

My first ever quilt - the finished product

Part 2 of How it all started
Little did I know but this idea of making a 'one and only quilt' has turned into a wonderful hobby, a passion, something I'd love to do all day everyday if I could!

The making of this quilt took over 10 years and within this time saw some huge life changes.

- My 16 year relationship broke up - devastation hit!
- I pretty much moved into 'our' first home alone - sadness!
- Within a month I fell in love with my soul mate - miracle!
- Within weeks my G.P advised me to change my circle of friends. I was having life threatening allergies to my soul mates' horses - frightening!
- Within weeks my soul mate had proposed - pure joy!
- Within a month of that I was diagnosed with cancer - terror!
- Within a month of that I had radical neck surgery - absolute horror!
- Within 3 months I was having radioactive therapy - vomit!
- Within 9 months I had further surgery - lowest of the lows!

But I am proud to say that with the help and encouragement of my dear friend Maggie, the Snowy Mountains Quilters and my fiance, I finished my quilt. Maggie entered my quilt in the Dalgety Show before I had even finished. Much to my shock and absolute delight, I got 1st prize in the 'Machine pieced, professionally quilted' section. It was a very proud moment - a life highlight that I will never forget. There's so much more to the story but that's it in a nutshell.

The quilt that I couldn't even look at without crying after my relationship breakup turned into a quilt that I absolutely cherish and love. It tells me a story of where I've been, the highs and lows I've been through and how it's possible to come out the other side with the support and care of those you love around you.

Here it is. I hope you like it. All comments welcome and appreciated!

Oh and my label on the back says "Love grows in happy hearts"

Xmas decoration swap blunder

Who can guess what the problem is???? There's actually 2 blunders. Now I am in a spot of bother! From home, I'm about 85km from a fabric shop.
So it looks like my thought of having this finished tonight just won't happen. Just not sure how I'm going to get around this one as I don't have any other Xmas material!
Oh well, don't sweat the small stuff, Shauna.

How it all started

Let me start by saying that I was never a crafty person, a quilter, a home decorator, a lover of fine fabrics, a colourful person or very imaginative. I failed sewing at school. I think because I did not have the patience or the inkling. In my eyes, I was a tomboy not a "sissy". I didn't have time for girly things. It was boring. Who would sit around sewing when there was a tree to climb or a peg gun to shoot? I was athletic not creative. Give me a fun run or a game of squash, not a craft project!

In the mid 90's (which was my mid 20's) I was sharing a rental flat with my boyfriend and a very crafty girlfriend of mine. I used to come home and she'd be sewing or doing something crafty - creating things that I could never imagine possible. How she came up with these ideas I do not know. How she found all the materials when we live in a small town is beyond me but I certainly couldn't contemplate taking a day trip to Canberra to buy craft supplies!

One morning I woke up and decided I was going to make a quilt. If Mandy could craft then I could quilt! How? Who knows? With what? No idea. I did not own a needle or thread. Didn't have a sewing box. Certainly didn't own a sewing machine. I really was clueless.

My flatmate Mandy suggested I go down to the newsagency and find a pattern. From what? I didn't even know you could buy patchwork magazines. I just wasn't that way inclined. If it wasn't a sports or adventure mag, I didn't want to know about it.

Off I eagerly went to the newsagency where I spent some time looking through mags and eventually came home with a pattern. I wanted to start on this quilt then and there. Well, what a nightmare! I then needed to get the materials! Where do you get them? Mandy pointed me in the direction of Cooma (which is 65kms away) and told me to go into the Fabric Salon to start looking. Poor Marney, the owner, must have thought I was mad. I was browsing in the shop for ages when she asked me what I needed. All I could do was point at the photo in the magazine and say "I don't know the first thing about sewing but I want to make that and I want to handsew all of it." Marney's eyes must have nearly popped out of her head but she kindly helped me to pick fabric for the blocks and told me to come back when they were finished.

I was so excited to be starting this project. I got home with all my beautiful fabrics and then read the pattern. How was I going to cut the fabric out? Some improvisation was required. I found some ordinary everyday scissors to use. All I had was a 30cm ruler and a pencil of which I used to very slowly draw the outline on the material for each piece in the block and then cut the pieces out. (Little did I know that there were such things as cutting boards and rotary cutters to speed up the process!)

Well, it tooks me hours to cut the pieces out for some of the hearts. It was exhausting. It took me even longer to piece the blocks together! Each block took me at least an hour to do. It was going to take forever (in actual fact it took years). I'd do a bit and lose interest and put it away for a few weeks/months and even years at a time. I didn't even know whether I was doing it right. It was all pure guess.

Close to 10 years went by and I became friends with Maggie, who is now one of my dearest friends. Maggie is extremely passionate about anything to do with sewing. She is also a fabricholic. She found out about this little project of mine and encouraged me to go to the Snowy Mountains Quilters meetings in the hope that I'd become passionate to finally finish my quilt. I very nervously went along with her one evening.

Welcome to the quilting world, Shauna!

(PS It's now nearly 11.30am and I haven't started my Xmas decoration project! Must away and start today!)

Deck the halls!

I changed my mind. What better way to get motivation to finish a crafty project than to post the task on here. I'm involved in a Xmas decoration swap as part of my favourite online quilting group patchNquilt.

I've never made a Xmas decoration before. It's a terrifying thought to think that not only do I have to make a Xmas decoration BUT I also have to give it to someone else! Until Monday just passed, I didn't even own any Xmas material! Well, now I do. Here it is. I bought a kit from Hobbysew. Hopefully it will do the job. But first I have to start it. I'm hoping by putting this on my blog, it will give me motivation to finish it today. But alas, the procrastinator hasn't even made the phone call she was supposed to make that was going to determine the direction of her day.

Anyway, here's the material... wonder what it will turn into? Maybe you'll see the finished product tonight!

The new blog!

Greetings from Shauna in Jindabyne, NSW Australia. Wow! This is my new blog! I'm very excited and awfully nervous. I'm new to the blogging world. I really don't know what direction this blog is going to take me but I hope you'll all enjoy my journey. Come on, come along for the ride.

I recently joined an online quilting group "patchNquilt" http://au.groups.yahoo.com/group/patchNquilt/ as I couldn't attend the local Snowy Mountains Quilters patchwork and quilting group meetings as the group meets during the day when I work. Through the online group, I've been introduced to a few people's blogs.

I've been dabbling with the idea of creating my own blog. I like to read about other people - where they live, their interests and motivations but most particularly I love to to see their creations. I find it quite fascinating and motivating. It's also a great way to get ideas for my future projects.

Future projects I say. It sounds like I'm a patchwork and quilting guru! Ha! Far from it. I've only ever finished a couple of projects but I'll share them with you in future sessions. Maybe I'll be a motivation to someone else!

Anyway, it's Friday morning and a day off and one phone call today will determine what happens for the rest of it!

I think in my next post I'll share some things with you about me....how I got into patchworking, my first project, why it turned into a UFO for over 10 years and the finished product. It has certainly been a journey and a half. Til then....as Helen Keller said 'May life be a daring adventure, or nothing.' Like it?
